Pas-de-Calais

Pas-de-Calais

Easily accessible from the UK and ideal introduction to French life and culture for school trips.

Region Overview

Just 30 minutes’ drive from Calais, Boulogne has a colourful market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings which provides a great opportunity for language exercises and for raising inter-cultural awareness. Narrow cobbled streets, protected by the 13th century ramparts, can easily be explored on foot. Nausicaá is Europe’s largest marine complex, encouraging a greater awareness of the oceans and of preservation of the marine environment – see sharks, penguins and sea lions in the huge aquariums and there’s also a touch pool.

Special day trip packages to Boulogne are available. Students studying the Second World War will find a thought-provoking exhibition of German rocket technology at the recently restored museum in La Coupole. The battlefields and memorials of the Somme are also within range. The Historial at Péronne gives a fascinating insight into the build-up to the First World War and the consequences of this conflict.

Experience the delights of traditional French cuisine with visits to chocolate makers, bakeries, snail farms, goat farms and sweet factories. Early booking is essential.
